What hands-on really means

The team explains how to approach the animals and what is suitable at the time. Some animals can be handled; others are better observed. Feeding schedules, the animal’s behaviour and the group all affect what is possible.

Tell us about favourite species in your enquiry, but keep the invitation open-ended. A photo on this website shows our animals, not a guaranteed party line-up. There is no promise of handling a particular snake, lizard or other species.

For children who need a gentler introduction

If your child is nervous, mention it before the party. Ask the team about watching first, keeping a little distance and choosing whether to take part. A child can enjoy learning about an animal without needing to hold it.

Share practical access or sensory requirements that would help us discuss the session. You do not need to send medical information or a child’s full name through the enquiry form.

Prepare guests for meeting live animals

• Explain that the team will give instructions before anyone approaches an animal.
• Make time to listen and ask questions; the session is about discovery.
• Ask about handwashing arrangements and adult supervision when planning.
• Check the photography arrangements with the team and other parents.
